blending several statement-making fixtures and patterns together, this kitchen screams “go big or go home.” in the industrial design world, form is king over function, but with this design, you won’t have to choose either; it’s the best marriage of and function one could ask for. read on to learn more about some of these fixtures I’m ~dying~ over right now, too!
first of all, let’s talk about this sink. I am obsessed with this sink! the farmstead, one of kohler’s newest releases (not yet released, actually – set for q3 2018), is amazing! it’s a huge 45″ cast iron basin with about as many smart accessories (smart in the “functional” sense, not technological) and features you can think of. kohler really hit it out of the park with this one. taking inspiration from vintage cast iron sinks, this apron-front is actually a free-standing/wall-mount and has two styles of legs, contemporary and traditional. to keep this particular design a little trendier, I went with the contemporary legs. you can read more about the sink here.
secondly, the major focal point of this design is this holy grail of a range by la cornue, my newest and favorite brand discovery. these ranges are bespoke out of france and come in a rainbow of colors with stainless, brass, and copper trim options. though matte black is a base color option (heart eye emoji!), I opted for a glossy (brilliant black) base to give it a bit more of a punch. since stainless accents are key on the sink, the other focal point of the kitchen, I stuck to chrome and stainless trims instead of brass or copper. adding too many elements wouldn’t create continuity between the objects; harmony is key, not competition – especially when working with fixtures as statement making as these.
the third killer feature of this room is the flooring: this super bold tile pattern from ann sacks is extremely on-trend, bringing the design up-to-date, though it draws inspiration from older style kitchens with patterned and textured floors to add a touch of that true farmhouse feel. though the pattern is busy, the soft greys and blacks blend nicely with the other greys, blacks and whites in the design. since the rest of the colors used are mostly solid, this offers just the right amount of pattern as to not be boring.
with such bold, statement-making fixtures and flooring, the faucet and hardware were kept simple and on-trend with a matte black finish, clean lines, and a pull-down faucet feature. a clean, staggered mosaic backsplash is on trend but not overtly modern, again creating a nice farmhouse vibe. sticking with a white grout provides a clean feel and doesn’t feel overdone.
lastly, the cabinetry and countertops: a shaker-style cabinet is massively hot right now, simple, and unobtrusive to the design. maple wood cabinets in the same shaker style for the island topped with a charcoal black silestone top creates a contemporary yet vintage inspired feel. the maple tones of the island break up the relative darkness of the kitchen and add a bit more light to the space, as well as a subdued splash of unexpected color. the tone in itself also gives off a bit of a mid-century vibe, which creates a unique and fun space. darker grey cabinets with a light grey cambria quartz for the surrounding cabinetry blends the color palette together, while keeping it simple and clean.
